چکیده

This paper presents computational results obtained with the direct simulation Monte Carlo DSMC method for several biconic test cases in which shock interactions and ow separation reattachment are key features of the ow Recent ground based experiments have been performed for several biconic con gurations and surface heating rate and pressure measurements have been proposed for code validation studies The present focus is to expand on the current validating activities for a relatively new DSMC code called DS V that Bird second author has developed Comparisons with experiments and other computations help clarify the agreement currently being achieved between computations and experiments and to identify the range of measurement variability of the proposed validation data when benchmarked with respect to the current computations For the test cases with signi cant vibrational nonequilibrium the e ect of the vibrational energy surface accommodation on heating and other quantities is demonstrated

State resolved vibrational relaxation modeling for strongly nonequilibrium flows

Vibrational relaxation is an important physical process in hypersonic flows. Activation of the vibrational mode affects the fundamental thermodynamic properties and finite rate relaxation can reduce the degree of dissociation of a gas. Low fidelity models of vibrational activation employ a relaxation time to capture the process at a macroscopic level. High fidelity, state-resolved models have b...

Rotational and Vibrational Nonequilibrium in a Low Diffusion Particle Method for Continuum Flow Simulation

A low diffusion particle method for simulating compressible low Knudsen number gas flows is modified for application to flows involving nonequilibrium distributions in rotational and vibrational energy modes. This method is closely based on the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, and has been developed for use in a strongly coupled hybrid scheme with DSMC. In simulations employing this...

The Analysis of Underexpanded Jet Flows for Hypersonic Aerodynamic Experiments in Vacuum Chambers

Underexpanded jets have become widely used in studies of rarefied-gas flows [1][3] and aerodynamics of hypersonic probes in wind tunnels [4]-[7]. The objective of the present study is to analyze shapes and flow parameters in internal regions of hypersonic underexpanded viscous jets, and to apply the jet theory to hypersonic studies. Analytical solutions [7] are used for estimating internal flow...

Hybrid Particle-Continuum Simulations of Non-Equilibrium Hypersonic Blunt Body Flows

A modular particle-continuum (MPC) numerical method is presented which solves the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations in regions of near-equilibrium and uses the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method where the flow is in non-equilibrium. The MPC method is designed specifically for steady-state, hypersonic, nonequilibrium flows and couples existing, state-of-the-art DSMC and NS solvers into a sin...

Towards Development of a Hybrid DSMC-CFD Method for Simulating Hypersonic Interacting Flows

A preliminary hybrid particle-continuum computational framework for simulating hypersonic interacting flows is proposed. The framework consists of the direct simulation Monte Carlo-Information Preservation (DSMC-IP) method coupled with a NavierStokes solver. Since the DSMC-IP method provides the macroscopic information in each time step, determination of the continuum fluxes across the interfac...
